New York family files lawsuit against doctors who gave opioid painkillers to daughter’s killer

A New York family has filed a lawsuit against three doctors who they allege negligently prescribed opioid painkillers to their daughter’s drug-addicted killer. Jennifer Mejia was killed along with three other victims in June 2011 during a drug store robbery committed by one of the doctors’ patients. (more…)

Doctors petition FDA for stronger warning about opioid painkiller side effects

A group of doctors has sent a petition to the Food and Drug Administration asking the agency to place new restrictions on the requirements for prescribing opioid painkiller drugs. The petition requests that the FDA restrict the prescription of these potent painkillers for use only with cancer patients or patients with severe pain, and to limit how much and for how long patients can be treated with these drugs. FDA warns of opioid painkillers side effects risk

The Food and Drug Administration has introduced a new treatment strategy to help limit the number of overdoses and other side effects caused by long-acting prescription painkillers known as opioids. Also known as a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS), the FDA’s new program is designed to inform patients about how to use opioid painkillers safely while ensuring that patients who need these drugs continue to receive access.
