Pennsylvania physician to serve 9+ years for overprescribing fentanyl, other painkillers to patients

A Pennsylvania pain specialist who was once the state‚Äôs leading prescriber of pain medications has been found guilty of illegally prescribing painkillers to addicts and other patients. Dr. Van Edward Scott will serve at least 9.5 years in prison for these illegal painkiller prescriptions, as well as tampering with or fabricating evidence in the case. (more…)

More than half of hospital patients treated with powerful prescription painkillers, study reveals

A new study conducted by researchers in Massachusetts has found that more than half of all patients in the United States who are hospitalized for non-surgical reasons are given powerful opioid painkiller drugs. In many cases, these patients receive large doses of these prescription painkillers, putting them at an increased risk of dependency, addiction, and overdose. (more…)

FDA announces new controls on the prescription of Vicodin and hydrocodone drugs

The Food and Drug Administration has announced a plan to place new restrictions on the prescription of Vicodin and other hydrocodone combination drugs. Under the new controls, hydrocodone combination products would be reclassified from Schedule III to Schedule II drugs, making them subject to stronger rules on how they could be prescribed. (more…)
