In an effort to curb the epidemic of opioid painkiller abuse, many doctors and health providers are turning to alternative treatments in an effort to avoid exposing patients to the risk of dependence, addiction, and overdose caused by these drugs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, overdoses caused by opioid painkillers killed more than 28,000 Americans in 2014, with thousands addicted to these drugs. (more…)

Opioid painkillers overprescription ‘one of the great mistakes of modern medicine’ says former FDA chief

The former head of the Food and Drug Administration says that the dramatic increase in the prescription of opioid painkiller medications in recent decades is “one of the great mistakes of modern medicine.” Dr. David Kessler ran the FDA from 1990 through 1997, around the time that the current epidemic of opioid painkillers overprescription began. FDA issues black box warning for opioid painkillers to curb overdose, addiction risks

The Food and Drug Administration has announced that it will require a “black box” warning on the most widely prescribed class of opioid painkillers in an effort to curb the epidemic of fatal overdoses linked to these drugs. The new FDA warning will be required for all immediate-release opioid painkillers, including combination pills that combine opioid medications with non-prescription drug ingredients. (more…)

Massachusetts Senator raises questions about FDA approval of opioid painkillers at confirmation hearing

The Senate confirmation of Dr. Robert Califf to become the new FDA commissioner hit a snag recently when Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Edward Markey placed a “hold” on the nomination over objections to the agency’s approval process for opioid painkillers. Sen. Markey says that in recent years, the FDA has “willfully blinded itself to the warning signs” about the risks of opioid painkiller prescriptions, which have caused roughly 47,000 deaths since 2014.
