Native American tribes file lawsuit against opioid manufacturers and distributors

Three Native American tribes in South Dakota have filed suit against manufacturers and distributors of opioid painkillers for their role in the nationwide opioid epidemic. The lawsuit – filed by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, and the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate – alleges that the 24 opioid manufacturers and distributors named in the complaint hid the addiction of these medications in Native American tribal communities. President Trump says U.S. opioid epidemic is a ‘health emergency’

President Donald Trump called on the Department of Health and Human Services to declare the U.S. opioid crisis a public health emergency and to take steps to combat the epidemic of addiction and overdose caused by prescription painkillers. As part of the announcement, the President directed federal health agencies to begin taking new steps to combat the opioid epidemic, which has ravaged the U.S. over the past two decades. (more…)
