Drugmakers blocking opioid painkillers marketing investigation, New Hampshire attorney general says

New Hampshire attorney general Joe Foster has accused five drug companies of blocking a statewide probe into whether the drugmakers broke the law in their marketing of opioid painkillers such as OxyContin. Foster says that the investigation could result in a state lawsuit against the drug companies if they are found to have violated New Hampshire laws by downplaying the addiction risk of opioid medications. Opioid painkillers overprescription ‘one of the great mistakes of modern medicine’ says former FDA chief

FDA issues black box warning for opioid painkillers to curb overdose, addiction risks

The Food and Drug Administration has announced that it will require a “black box” warning on the most widely prescribed class of opioid painkillers in an effort to curb the epidemic of fatal overdoses linked to these drugs. The new FDA warning will be required for all immediate-release opioid painkillers, including combination pills that combine opioid medications with non-prescription drug ingredients. (more…)

Massachusetts Senator raises questions about FDA approval of opioid painkillers at confirmation hearing

The Senate confirmation of Dr. Robert Califf to become the new FDA commissioner hit a snag recently when Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Edward Markey placed a “hold” on the nomination over objections to the agency’s approval process for opioid painkillers. Sen. Markey says that in recent years, the FDA has “willfully blinded itself to the warning signs” about the risks of opioid painkiller prescriptions, which have caused roughly 47,000 deaths since 2014. Painkillers are the leading cause of death among male patients taking high dose opioids, study reveals

A large scale study of patients in Ontario, Canada has found that one in four male patients taking high dose opioid painkillers later died as a result of opioid-related causes. Dr. David Juurlink, a physician involved with the study, said that these results underscored the importance of restricting the use of powerful opioid painkillers like fentanyl and oxycodone in order to reduce the risk of overdose and other complications for patients. FDA approves new abuse-resistant OxyContin-alternative drug Targiniq ER

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new form of the painkiller OxyContin designed to limit the potential for abuse and curb the number of overdose deaths caused by the drug. The new drug, Targiniq ER, is made by Perdue Pharma. It combines the active painkiller ingredient oxycodone with naloxone, a medication which is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
